North Island Tour

This morning we went on a tour of the north side of the island going to a few dive sites, Karpata, Gotomeer, Rincon, and Seru Largu. On the bus tour we learned some of the history of the island and how dive sites got their names.

The dive site called a 1000 Steps is called this because even though there are only 72 steps when done diving and walking back up with all your SCUBA gear it feels more like a 1000 steps.

Next stop was Karpata which served as a protection base from attacks back in the day. It is/was a plantation for aloe, and some other things. Here we got to eat some cacti from the Kadushi cacti, which was tasty. We also learned about the shimaruku, which is a type of cherry. Yesterday in class one of our instructors brought some in for us to try and they were really good. Saw some donkeys as well. They are considered invasive here though they didn't go to in depth as to why. It has to do with grazing and how they can change the landscape. Our instructor told us we would learn more about it on another tour we will be going on in the future.

Gotomeer is where we saw a bunch of flamingoes.

Rincon is located in a valley on the island and is the oldest village on Bonaire. The location of Rincon helped the people ward off dangers such as pirates.

Seru Largu gave us a panoramic view of the island specifically Kralendijk. We were also able to see Klein Bonaire.
